Clay and wood are such humble materials which turn into highly prized treasures when they leave the Cohen's studios. Herb is a retired businessman who started wood turning approximately 12 years ago. He attended Campbell School of Arts & Crafts and Arromount in Tennessee. Like most, he started with spindle items, then bowls and closed vessels and then sculpture.
" I am not sure how it happened but I found myself creating sculpture. For the past five years I have attempted to produce pieces that represent abstract art. Sometimes wood sits on my chop floor for years before we, the wood and I, decide what to do with it".
Herb has taught wood turning at the Palm beach county Boys & Girls Club along with volunteering at Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary School where he is a teacher's assistant in the reading program. Herb's pieces have been exhibited at Mounts Botanical Garden, West Palm Beach Armory Art Center and Admiral's Cove and the Orlando Museum of Art 2004 in conjunction with the American Association of Wood Turners Annual Symposium.
