Henry Gernhardt’s “Wave Collection" is a serie inspired by the fluidity of running water. Each original hand built piece of ceramic art starts from a slab of clay and is built into a structural masterpiece.
As Fulbright Scholar to Finland and Ford Grant recipient to Japan, Henry Gernhardt's works have been exhibited internationally including such notable galleries as Rockefeller Art Center, American Craftsman Museum, Alfred, and the Newark Museum .
Considered an icon in the world of ceramics, Gernhardt was Professor Emeritus at the renowned Syracuse University Ceramics Department. In addition to being an artist extraordinaire, Gernhardt’s skills as a chemist has led to creation of several unique glazes whose recipes are a closely guarded secret. Ceramists have for years tried to duplicate his famous blue glaze and he to this day yields the formula to no one
Gernhardt’s technique as a potter are literally textbook as he has contributed to many collegiate ceramic’s instruction books including New Ceramics, an international survey of ceramics works, American Ceramics, RAKU, a comprehensive survey of the raku process, and Perfect Pots, an international publication of the best pots created over the past 90 years where Henry’s blue bowl was included.
Henry Gernhardt fame in the international world of ceramics is such that he is know simply by “Henry”. A mention of “Henry” to a potter means only one person. There is no confusion about which Henry one refers to in ceramics circles because to a potter , there is only one Henry.
